The 100th edition of the Wielka Warszawska race and the 1st Qatar Race in Warsaw are behind us / a great day of triumph for Patronus and Amor-Amor
Wielka Warszawska for the 100th time
On 29 September great crowds celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Wielka Warszawska Race, the most important horse race in Poland. The speed was high from the very start and the race full of suspense. The first straight line saw an unsuccessful escape attempt by Camerun, the favourite among the contenders.
Everything was resolved about 300 m before the finish line. That was when the winner of the Warsaw Derby, Patronus, overtook rest of the group and fought with Kundalini for leadership in the race until the last meters. The mare, ridden by the Czech jockey Tomas Lukasek, pressed hard on Patronus, ridden this time by Szczepan Mazur instead of the famous jockey Kieren Fallon. In the end Patronus kept his ground and won by a neck at the finish line.
Suo, ridden by the Frenchman Fabien Levebvre, finished the race several lengths behind the leading duo, both trained by Andrzej Walicki, with Kara directly behind him. The fifth was Lucky Peter, with Camerun, last year’s winner, finishing sixth.
The Qatar Race, for the first time in Warsaw
On the same day the longest race in the history of the Służewiec Race Course, 8200 m, sponsored by the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club (QREC), took place for the first time. The participants were 4 year and older Arabian Group II horses, who completed a race over a distance not shorter than 3600 m in 2013. The winner was the 11 year-old gelding, Amor Amor, the runner up being the 5 year old stallion Stinger, and 6 year old Golding Wojaż coming third.
The public supported the contenders with a great deal of interest and enthusiasm.
The Qatar Riding and Equestrian Club Prize was given by its Director, Mr Sami Jassim al-Boenian, who is also the IFAHR President. He promised increasing involvement at the Służewiec Race Course and the organization of a Quatar Day once again in the 2014 season.
